On 2 October 1990, one of the greatest opera singers of all time bid farewell to the stage. Dame Joan Sutherland enjoyed a long and enormously prosperous career, which drew to a conclusion with this glorious performance of Meyerbeer’s Les Huguenots, a tragic story concerning the St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre, set during the French Wars of Religion.
Sutherland is joined at the Sydney Opera House by a cast of all-star Australian singers, including Amanda Thane, Suzanne Johnston, Anson Austin, John Pringle, Clifford Grant and John Wegner. The performance is conducted by Richard Bonynge and directed by Lotfi Mansouri, with lavish costumes by Sutherland’s long-time collaborator Michael Stennett and sets by John Stoddart.
