If there’s one role Dame Joan Sutherland will always be associated with, it’s Lucia. Her performance of the role at Covent Garden in London in 1959 made her an almost immediate superstar, with rave reviews and a rapturous audience response. Her version of the famous “mad scene” in the third act – an extraordinary technical challenge and showpiece for the singer playing Lucia – is now legendary.
She brought her performance home to Australia several times over the following decades, and returned to her signature role in 1986 in a season at the Sydney Opera House’s Concert Hall. This production was directed by John Copley and lavishly designed by Henry Bardon and Michael Stennett. Sutherland is joined by Richard Greager, Malcolm Donnelly, John Wegner and Clifford Grant and conducted by Richard Bonynge. (Stream Premiere)
