Enrico Caruso famously said all you need for a successful performance of Verdi’s fiery masterpiece is the four greatest singers in the world. This 1983 performance of 'Il Trovatore' at the Sydney Opera House features some of Australia’s all-time greatest: Dame Joan Sutherland stars as Leonora, with Kenneth Collins and Jonathan Summers as the two men who love her, Manrico and Count di Luna. Lauris Elms rounds on the leading quartet as Azucena, the mysterious avenging woman whose unthinkable act – the abduction of a newborn baby – sets the wheels in motion for this opera’s brilliant plot. Richard Bonynge conducts the dark and moody production by Elijah Moshinsky with sets by legendary Australian painter Sidney Nolan.
