Renowned worldwide for his enduring influence on music, composer Steve Reich has been hailed as “the most original musical thinker of our time”. In 2012, Sydney Opera House welcomed Reich to Australia, working in a week-long residence with performers and students, leading up to a series of performances titled ‘Steve Reich- A Celebration’.
In this, the first part of the ‘Celebration’ series staged in the Concert Hall, Synergy Percussion perform 1971’s minimalist masterpiece ‘Drumming (Part I)’ and 2009’s Mallet Quartet’, scored for vibraphone and marimba; and, in a unique opening moment, the composer joins them on stage to perform ‘Clapping Music’ from 1972, a piece of music that needs no instruments beyond the human body.
