Is there something fundamentally wrong with our media? This year’s election exposed wide dissatisfaction with the conduct of many journalists on the campaign trail and the apparent bias of much campaign analysis. Politicians were required to do party tricks, journalists seemed more concerned with catching them out than helping us to understand their vision and priorities for the country. But dissatisfaction with our journos doesn’t just come at election time.
Is there something structurally wrong with Australian media? Are we finally seeing the results of long-term disinvestment, and the gutting of newsrooms? Has endorphin-producing, caustic opinion (which is also a lot cheaper to produce) finally undermined our news? What can we do about it?
