35/50: Peter Allen - In Concert (1977)
Available Australia only from 7th Oct to 7th Nov 2023.
Widely adored Australian entertainer extraordinaire Peter Allen, performs to a sold-out Sydney Opera House crowd in this seminal 1977 concert film. Known for his flamboyant stage persona, energetic performances, and lavish costumes, Allen's formidable songwriting repertoire is also on display. Songs include his biggest hit, 'I Go To Rio', which shot to the top of the Australian charts only weeks earlier, and remained there for a staggering nineteen weeks; and 'I Honestly Love You', written for Olivia Newton-John, scoring her a worldwide hit and a Grammy Award for 'Record of the Year'.
The 1977 concert program notes that Allen's ""records and nightclub act are still considered rarified fare, something like a croissant on a plate of bagels"". Yet, decades later, his work remains known around the world, thanks in no small part to the stage musical 'The Boy From Oz', originally featuring Todd McKenney as Allen, playing to over one million Australians in 1998 and 1999, and revived on Broadway in 2003 with a Tony Award-winning performance from Hugh Jackman.
