Winner of the 1981 AFI Award for Best Documentary, 'Stepping Out' explores the lives of a theatre group of people with disability as they prepare for their first public performance, to be held at the Sydney Opera House.
The film follows this event from its beginnings, showing the startling growth of confidence and ability in the performers, and climaxing with their triumphant first performance. The focus of the film is on two members of the group: 31-year-old Chris Dobbin, a dancer of extraordinary talent, and his girlfriend Romayne Grace, 21, who provides the film's commentary. 'Stepping Out' explores their warmly affectionate relationship, and their attitudes to each other, and their hopes for the future.
This presentation features a new introduction, filmed exclusively for the 50/50 season, by director & producer Chris Noonan. (Stream Premiere)
