Live Captioned
Rioters stormed the US Capitol to overturn a presidential election. Medical professionals cite COVID treatment myths, despite no scientific proof. You might have a friend who was a part of lockdown riots, or who is convinced about vaccine conspiracies. It seems crazy - until we realise a decline in traditional news means lies spread quickly online. False information grows in Facebook bubbles, where credibility and accuracy are swapped for a friend's recommendation. This affects governments delivering services, such as mass vaccination to fight a global pandemic. Are social media networks out of control, posing a threat to democracy?
Join former PM Malcolm Turnbull AC and Ed Coper, author of Facts and Other Lies, to discuss whether it's time for governments to prevent the spread of disinformation.
