Caroline Garcia’s Choose your Fighter, is a moving image work in which Garcia recasts herself as a (Head)hunter. Armed with an Indigenous Filipino blowgun known as a sumpit, Garcia moves throughout this virtual space, dotted with abbreviated clips of women of colour offering advice and testimony on topics such as self-love and cooking that showcase spectrums of womanhood.
By referring to the head hunting practices of the Ilongot Filipino people, Garcia’s ancestral homeland, the video serves as a confrontation of personal grief, stemming from the loss of Garcia’s mother, while signifying and reinforcing her womanhood through the presence of these contemporary de-facto matriarchs.
