The Sydney Opera House annually creates visual descriptions of the animation projected onto the iconic Opera House sails for people who are blind or have low vision. This year, the animation was a collaboration bringing to life the intricate painting ‘Yarrkalpa – Hunting Ground, 2021’ in which eight Martu Artists depicted the Western Australian community of Parnngurr and its landscape. Sydney design house Curiious worked in close consultation with the artists to ensure a true and culturally appropriate rending of their work which was complemented by a electro-soul soundtrack from Electric Fields. The Audio Description created by Stephen McAuley, in the continuing spirit of collaboration, was informed by the stories within the painting that the Martu Artists shared. Stephen McAuley is a senior trainer and guide at Sydney Opera House where he leads a variety of tours including specialist tours for blind, low vision and autistic visitors. Steve is also an experienced Audio Describer for live theatre and digital content.
