Liminal is a bold contemporary music film series featuring eight Australian artists as they create unique live performances for the screen.
Blazing a trail into the sonic future, Sydney singer-songwriter Maina Doe has fast become a singular talent on the local music scene, fusing her love of old-school R&B and hip-hop with cutting-edge neo-soul and her distinctive Somali-Indonesian heritage. Making her highly anticipated Sydney Opera House debut as part of Liminal, the rising star transforms the Joan Sutherland Theatre stage with her evocative sense of melody, movement and light.
Emerging from an exciting new generation of Sydney performers, the Indonesian-born Maina Doe applied her love of 90s R&B, Andre 3000 and Frank Ocean to creating a style all her own, fusing new-soul, digital-age hip-hop and electronic beats for the 21st century – the sound of glimmering summer nights with a hint of melancholy. Her 2019 debut single, “Delusion”, was a breakthrough success, while her electrifying 2020 follow-up, “Unwritten Laws”, found her collaborating with hip-hop talent Genesis Owusu. She was named by Junkee as one of the 13 artists set to shape Australian music in 2021.
“Maina Doe is a superstar. A model and musician – born to perform.” – Russh
