Opera Australia: Aida - Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour (2015)
2h 21m
Recorded live at Mrs Macquaries Point, Sydney, 2015.
Sung in Italian with English Subtitles, available as Closed Captions (CC)
When war breaks out, Radamès is chosen to lead the Egyptian army against Ethiopia. Victory makes Radamès a hero, but tangles his Ethiopian lover Aida in a dangerous royal love triangle and a very personal war. Aida must make an impossible choice when her father begs her to betray her lover for the sake of her homeland.
In 2015, Gale Edwards directed this Opera Australia production, bringing a contemporary lens to one of the world’s favourite operas. Lavishly designed by Mark Thompson, the staging is epic in scale but intensely intimate, telling the story of the enslaved princess Aida, her great love Radamès and her rival Amneris.
Latonia Moore, who caused a sensation when she first played Aida at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, delivers a gripping and sublime performance of the role that made her famous. She’s well matched by Milijana Nikolic as Amneris and Walter Fraccaro as Radamès.
Brian Castles-Onion conducts an orchestra hidden beneath the stage.
