Sydney Symphony Orchestra: Dvořák and Bartók
55m
Colourful and surprising. This music by Dvořák and Bartók showcases the immense diversity of sound and expression that the instruments of the Orchestra have to offer.
Dvořák’s Serenade for Winds creates a rich and full sound with only a small ensemble of musicians. This loving tribute to the Czech tradition of woodwind playing is warm-hearted, cheerful music.
Bartók’s Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta is one of his greatest creations. Its eerie, otherworldly aspects were used to great effect in the films The Shining and Being John Malkovich. Its central movement is a marvellously spooky nocturne, with the calls of strange night-birds; but its finale brings us into the sun with guitar-like strings and irrepressible timpani.
