Puccini’s tale of love and death comes to Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour in this spectacular and thoughtful production from 2016.
Chinese director Chen Shi-Zheng brings a fresh eye to the fable of the ice-hearted princess and the prince who seeks her love. Shi-Zheng’s work forms a bridge between Chinese and Western artistic approaches, drawing on the Hollywood film tradition, theatrical acrobatics and traditional Chinese opera to create works that thrill visually and cut to the heart.
Dragana Radakovic stars as Turandot alongside Riccardo Massi as Calaf and Hyeseoung Kwon as Liù. Puccini’s score soars out across the harbour under conductor Brian Castles-Onion, with the timeless ‘Nessun Dorma’ at the opera’s climax.
