Liminal is a bold contemporary music film series featuring eight Australian artists as they create unique live performances for the screen.
Take a hypnotic journey with The Necks’ master pianist. As one third of one of Australia’s most important bands The Necks’ – famously dubbed “the greatest trio on Earth” by the New York Times – New Zealand-born pianist Chris Abrahams is no stranger to the Sydney Opera House stage, having performed with the acclaimed ensemble on multiple occasions. Now, ahead of The Necks’ return to the stage in February 2022, Abrahams is bringing his spellbinding solo show to the Joan Sutherland Theatre for an exclusive performance as part of a new music film series, Liminal.
A sonic adventurer whose improvisational approach is matched by his expressive sense of melody, Abrahams has been pushing boundaries as part of the Sydney music since the early 1980s, working with artists as diverse as The Church, Midnight Oil and Silverchair, and performing as a member of The Sparklers, Laughing Clowns, and The Necks – the legendary jazz trio who have collaborated with Brian Eno, Swans and Underworld. For his Liminal performance, Abrahams will be drawing upon his acclaimed latest solo album, Appearance (2020), though as always, expect the unexpected: this master of improvisation is likely to take you to the outer-limits of sound.
“A self-contained world of melodic ideas, mood or texture. Routinely in play is Abrahams' penchant for glacial beauty, enigma and a sense of disquiet.” – Sydney Morning Herald
